Return to Dolce Vita

On December 28, 2018 we returned to Fort Pierce.  Our month home was too short, but we enjoyed seeing our family and as many friends as we could! 

It felt good, though, to be back to our boat and the water!  The first thing I did was greet Inky Rose!   She missed us very much yet she didn't hold it against us that we left her and did a super job of guarding Dolce Vita!

It was a hot day and I took advantage of it to bask in the sun.  I also took a few laps in the pool at the marina!

Our friend, Bill,  joined us after a short time.  He wanted to cruise down Lake Okeechobee with us.  He also helped Ed with the new Captain's Chair.


 One of the jobs Ed accomplished was making me a Captain's Chair for when I take the helm.  Of course, he can use it also!  I can't stand for a long period of time with my knee issues so this is a really great thing!  So lucky to have a handy husband!



 Ed had a great idea to initiate sundowners at the pavilion.  There was a good turn out.  Everyone brought their own drink and a snack to share.  There were some delicious meatballs, chips and dip, popcorn and cheese and crackers.  It was nice to meet other fellow boaters.  A lot of these people were there waiting for a weather window to go to the Bahamas.



 Before we returned our rental car, we drove over to the Manatee Observation Center.  It closed before we got there but we walked around it looking for some manatees.  No luck in seeing them. 

 I really enjoyed the art all around the area.



 
 

Just as D.C. has their pigeons all around the city, we often see these egrets just walking on the sidewalks!

                                              


We went to dinner at this restaurant.  Wonderful food!  Again, there were examples of art almost everywhere!
 








This is very hard to see.  The lights were bright for me to get a good photo, but the fans over the bar were on a long pole that went all across the bar, and had blades similar to mine in my kitchen.  Very unique.



Then it was time to travel South again.  We were headed to Lake Okeechobee.  All of us were so looking forward to this part of the trip!

I am going to try a different way of blogging.  I may skip some days and not play catch up but continue from where I am.  I will fill in what I've skipped if I decide I want to include something special or of interest. I will see how it goes.  Inky Rose also needs to come exploring more.  She is so quiet that I forget to take her with me!  We have been traveling down the ICW (the ditch) steadily.  Navigating the ditch is tricky when you have to look at charts and mark down the tides, the depth, and all the times involved in a safe passage. There a few areas, especially in Georgia, where Dolce Vita has a terrible time finding a suitable anchoring spot.  Ed doesn't like to be at any depth lower than 6 or 7 ft. at low tide or deeper than 15 feet at high tide.  Since we don't have a windlass to pull up the anchor and chain, Ed has to do it himself and 15' is the limit of his ability to pull the heavy anchor and chain up.  Georgia has deep water and when it's not

Preparing for our new Adventure!

 Our last week home photo! One week to go for our second trip down the ICW and then back to the Bahamas!  We are in the one week to go blitz!  Feeling the crunch, a good crunch, though!  My emotions are different from the first trip.  I know, through first hand experience, just how much I will really miss everyone!  The excitement of seeing new islands is still just as thrilling and I will definitely enjoy visiting the places along the new route we are taking. Our plan is to go down Lake Okeechobee, Fl to the Gulf coast of Fl, down to the Keys for the Winter and then head to the Eleuthera and the Abaco Islands for the Spring.  As we have majorly learned from our 2016 trip, plans are always subject to change! Swansborough, NC

We needed a place to stay for the night, so we decided to stay at a very inexpensive marina, Dudley's in Swansborough.  When we got there it was still in a rising tide mode, and there wasn't enough depth for us.  We got mildly stuck a couple of times, gave up and went elsewhere.  We found Swansborough's town docks and stayed there.  There were no facilities for boaters.  This area was hard hit by Florence and they were still renovating.  We did get off the boat and visit the very small town of Swansborough.
